Recommended Contractor Packing List

Expectations

Weather conditions during a deployment will vary extremely. Recovery event operations may last several weeks. Laundry facilities may be available; However there will be minimal time to do personal laundry in the early stages of an event.  It is highly recommended that a contractor brings enough clothing for at least (7) days.  Keep in mind that even though a disaster occurred, all OSHA requirements will still be in effect and all of your clothing and personal protective equipment should meet their guidelines.  Please focus on the must have list (In Bold) to be effective on a storm.

Suggested for clothing to be placed in a “Go Bag”

  • Personal Protective Equipment
  • Hard hat
  • Reflective vest
  • Steel toe or composite toe work boot (No steel toe if Damage Assessor)

Personal Items Suggestions:

  • Portable cooler for drinks & ice while in field & Drinking water (2-day supply)
  • Food (2-day supply for emergency)
  • Head lamp with extra batteries
  • First Aid Kit
  • Sleeping Bag
  • Leather Gloves
  • Personal Hygiene Kit
  • Medications (If prescribed)
  • Shower Shoes
  • Personal Cash (Atm’s may not have power)

Warm/Wet Weather:

  • Work socks
  • Underwear
  • Light colored t-shirts
  • Light colored long sleeve shirts
  • Light work pants
  • Rubber boots
  • Work boots
  • Rain gear 
  • Work gloves
  • Heavy work socks
  • Insulated underwear
  • Heavy work gloves
  • Insulated work shirts
  • Warm jacket
  • Warm pants
  • Insulated coveralls or bibs
  • Warm headgear
  • Rain gear
  • Winter work boots
  • Head lamp

Truck/Vehicle requirements and suggested equipment:

  • ¾ -1 ton or larger truck
  • 4wd is a requirement on winter storms and recommended on all deployments
  • Wrench to change trailer towing ball if needed
  • Electric trailer brake controller installed in truck
  • Trailer wiring adaptors

  1. 4 way flat style
  2. 6 way round style
  3. 7 way RV style with ground

  • Jumper cables
  • Adjustable pintle and 3way ball hitch and pintle hitch
  • (2) 5 gallon fuel cans

  1. *one full of fuel type for your vehicle
  2. *one for use with diesel fuel

  • Spare fuel filter for your vehicle
  • Spare serpentine or V belt for your vehicle
  • Fluid for vehicle: engine oil, transmission fluid, power steering fluid, brake fluid, antifreeze/coolant
  • Vehicle jack for changing tires
  • Assorted wooden blocks or dunnage for use in chocking wheels or using as a base for the jack
  • Tire plug kit
  • Canvass/plastic tarp/cardboard (to lay on if working under the vehicle in bad weather)
  • (3) reflective triangles
  • Fire extinguisher (10-20 lb. ABC rated)
  • First aid kit with eye wash
  • Flashlight (with extra batteries)
  • Spotlight (makes finding cell towers at night easier)
  • 48”x ½ wood dowel for probing fuel tanks
  • 2-4 each 2” ratchet straps rated at 10,000 lbs.
  • Padlocks to secure equipment at night
  • Chemical resistant rubber gloves
  • Hard hat- OSHA/ANSI Z87.1-1986 & Reflective safety vest- ANSI/ISEA 107-2004 & Eye and face protection ANSI Z87.1-1989
  • Chainsaw/small shovel/ax
  • (2) 6” pipe wrenches
  • (1) 8”-12” C clamp

Additional Packing List for Electrical Teams:

  • Hex head wrench or T-handle set (up to 3/8)
  • Insulated screwdriver set
  • Utility knife with extra blades
  • Black electrical tape (6 rolls)
  • Electric code tape (red/blue/white/green)
  • Basic electrical tools
  • Lineman cutter/pliers
  • Volt/Ohm meter- Ampere probe
  • Rotation meter for 3 phase power
  • Insulated electric gloves 
  • Insulated lineman’s boots
